LAB
Our Research Focus
At the Merchak Lab, we are passionate about exploring the intricate connections between the gut, immune system, and brain. Our team is dedicated to unraveling the complexities of neurological disorders through innovative research and collaborative efforts. We aim to provide a deeper understanding of the gut-immune-brain axis and its impact on human health.

Understanding Bile Acids in Multiple Sclerosis
We have found that bile acid exposure can reduce autoimmunity. The question remains-how? We have a wealth of genetic tools to tease apart the role of bile acid signaling across multiple tissues.
Genetics and intestinal inflammation in dementia

Intestinal distress-irritable bowel, constipation- are early symptoms that come along with neurodegeneration. We are using mouse models to understand how genetic predisposition for neurodegeneration can lead to brain inflammation after gastro-intestinal distress.

Diet and repurposed drugs to treat MS
We hope to translate our findings into therapies in the clinic. Situated in the Stark Neurosciences Research Institute, we are poised to bring new hope to patients.
